Sakai: An open source, license-free and cost effective learning management system
Tue 8:15 – 9:00AM — Chestnut B
Lauryl Brown Lewis, Shepherd University
The Shepherd University academic community has completed the first full year of using Sakai as her primary learning management system. Sakai is an open-source, license free, system offering the functionality and use that a proprietary system offers, except without the cost. This presentation will provide an overall view of the Sakai interface and will demonstrate its ease of use and overall ability of a cost effective product. Sakai was developed by Sakai Collaboration and Learning Environment (CLE) and was originally funded by a grant from the Mellon Foundation. Sakai is in production at over 150 institutions throughout the nation. Because Sakai is open source it allows for change and revision of the code. Many institutions across the nation have participated in the Sakai community. For more information about Sakai please visit: http://www.sakaiproject.org/portal.
